Dear Amazon Readers,

I first saw Niagara Falls when I was twelve years old. My family was making a winter trip from the Midwest to New England. We arrived in Niagara close to sunset, with plans to spend the night. I don’t remember if it was my sister’s and my demand that required we see the falls right away, but that is what happened.

Over the years, I have had opportunities to visit sites renowned for their beauty and awe-inspiring nature and have occasionally been disappointed, but the falls exceeded my expectations. They were far more majestic and awesome than my twelve-year-old mind had been able to imagine.

I viewed the waterfall initially from a park. It was close enough to the mist rising from the falling water and drifting across the park that the trees within it had—because of the cold winter air—become encased in ice. The sun was low in the sky and the light that penetrated the mist glistened off the trees, creating an effect that made it seem as if the world was made of glass. In the background, the constant roar of the falls seemed to insist on my attention, no matter how magical the surrounding landscape.

This mist made a strong impression and left me with the peculiar memory of a place that was both enchanting and frightening.

Many years passed, and sometime in the early 1970s I happened upon a magazine article called “The Daredevils of Niagara Falls.” I discovered that over the previous century, the Falls had attracted a world-class group of eccentric risk takers. Among the most remarkable of these was the first person to go over the falls in a barrel. I was amazed to learn that this individual was a sixty-two-year-old retired charm school teacher named Annie Edson Taylor. Just as amazing to me was that I’d gotten to the age of twenty-two and had never heard of this woman and what she had done.

Why, I wondered, hadn’t I learned about this in school? I wouldn’t compare it to Lindberg crossing the Atlantic, but still, it seemed extraordinary in its own way, and yet had evidently been left to history.

About a year and a half ago, in the spirit of finding new challenges, I decided to undertake a project that was a change from the fantasies that make up a large part of my work. Recalling the pleasure I got as a child from reading biographies of unusual or accomplished Americans, and how satisfying it was to learn about American history and culture that way, I decided to write just such a biography. I couldn’t decide who might make a worthy subject and who had not already been the subject of other books. There, from the recesses of memory, sprang the name Annie Taylor.

Researching Mrs. Taylor’s life provided details that made it clear that her story was not one that fit into a conventional narrative of the determined underdog who triumphs over the challenges and obstacles placed before him or her, and emerges with admiration and rich rewards. Annie’s story was more complicated than that—and, to me, more interesting.

My initial design for the book was horizontal, partly to accommodate longer text in a thirty-two-page format. I ultimately changed to a vertical shape when it became clear a forty-page format would allow for a more effective balance of text and pictures. (I was also persuaded by my colleagues at the publisher that a vertical format was more appropriate for a book about a monumental fall.)

I have included here two sketches for jacket designs I made when still thinking about a horizontal book, as well as an example of what a very early and rough draft looks like as I attempt to work out the text placement and picture sequence.

When water flowing in the form of a stream for a long distance and at a high force, at a certain point tends to break its flow and falls from an elevation, the resultant formation is called as a waterfall. Waterfalls are generally formed in mountain environments where the water force is very high and when the stream course cannot find a path to flow through. Waterfalls are classified under different types like cascade, plunge, horsetail, fan, segmented etc depending on their type of flow from an elevation. There are a lot such waterfalls around the world known for their scenic beauty.

Some of the famous waterfalls around the world are:

Angel Falls
The Angel falls, named after its discoverer James Crawford Angel, is the world’s highest waterfalls and it falls from a height of 979 meters. It has its location in the Bolivar state in Venezuela. A unique feature of the falls is that most of the water falling down gets blown away by the winds as mist. The fallen water flows away as the Churun River.

Iguazu Falls
This waterfall is situated along the Brazil-Argentina border and is famed for its scenic beauty. Though its height is just about 89 meters, it ranks as the fourth best waterfall in the world because of its beauty. The U-shaped cliff in the waterfall which is known as the Devil’s throat is the most striking feature of this waterfall.

Tugela Falls
This is the world’s second highest waterfalls and it falls from a height of 947 meters. It is located in the Natal province in South Africa. The source of the falls, the Tugela River, is an ultimately pure river and is considered safe for consumption. The specialty of this waterfall is the presence of a series of five spectacular cascades.

Niagara Falls
The Niagara Falls is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world with about six million cubic meters of water flowing per minute. It is present in the Canada-America border and consists of a set of waterfalls namely the American falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe falls. It is well known for its beauty and attracts a large number of tourists from around the world.

Rhine Falls
The Rhine falls are the largest waterfalls in Europe. It is located in Switzerland near the German border. These are one of the oldest waterfalls which were believed to have formed about seventeen thousand years ago.

Yosemite Falls
The Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfalls in North America. It is located inside the Yosemite National Park in California. These falls are a combination of two plunge falls and a cascade falls. The upper falls plunges from a height of 425 meters and forms a cascade falls. The flow gets united again and forms the lower falls which has a height of 97 meters.

Jog Falls
The Jog falls is the highest waterfall in India. Its source is the Sharavathi River and it flows from a height of 253 meters. It is renowned for its scenic beauty and is a major tourist attraction in the country. It is also a major source for Hydro-electric power.

Victoria Falls
The Victoria Falls is considered to be the largest waterfalls in the world. It is located in the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and has the Zambezi River as its source. It stretches for a width of 1.7 kilometers and also falls from a height of 108 meters. Due to this physical formation, the falls produce a great level of sound and hence its name, the Smoke that Thunders. The forest site near the waterfalls contains the most unique species of wildlife.

Niagara Falls Winter Beauty

Over 12 million people from around the globe visit Niagara Falls each year, many of whom may not know what type of weather they will encounter when they step off the plane in Canada for the first time.

What Can I Expect?

The weather in Niagara Falls is a little different than in most parts of Canada. This is due partly because it’s unique surroundings like the Great Lakes and the Niagara Escarpment help keep the temperature moderate, but mostly because of the fact that the region is located in the country’s most southerly point.

In fact, if you were to look at a map of North America you would find that Niagara Falls is actually as far South or further than States like North Dakota, Washington and Minnesota. What kind of weather you could expect when you travel to the Falls will depend on what time of year you go.

Weather and temperature of the Seasons

Winter: Starting with the one that most travelers are trying to get away from, winter is actually a popular time of year to visit Niagara Falls. Between the Months of November and March the ground is usually snow covered and the average temperatures can range from -10 to degrees Celsius (16F to 37F) although it can get to -20C. Make sure you pack warm cloths, a heavy winter jacket, winter hat, winter boots and gloves if you are planning to visit the Falls during this time of year.

Spring: April through June are very pleasant times to visit the city. The flowers are blooming and the temperatures start to climb. On average you are going to see days range anywhere from 1 or 2 degrees Celsius at night up to the low twenties during the day (34F – 74F). If you are visiting in the Spring you should still bring warm cloths and a warm jacket or overcoat but you won’t need the gloves or boots.

Summer: If you’re looking for a hot place to go on vacation than Niagara Falls in the months of July, August and September are the place to be. We aren’t talking about the scorching heat like Arizona gets but during the Summer you can find average temperatures of 27 degrees C ( 81F).

The most popular time of year to visit Niagara Falls, visitors traveling in the Summer months can pack light as all you will most likely need are you shorts and shirts. Don’t forget to pack the sun block because you’re going to be seeing a lot of sights this time of year.

Autumn: A personal favourite, Fall time in Niagara is a splash of color and comfortable temperatures but that also depends on which part of Fall you visit. October is the best for warmer temps and changing leaves but as the month moves on the night begins to get much cooler and the mornings can have occurrences of frost.

November and December are when you start to get winter like temperatures creeping in at night. The weather at this time of year can vary widely day to day as one minute it can be a wonderful sunny day and the next you could have snow flurries blowing in.

Temperatures in the Fall can range drastically from summer time heat to winter time cold. Pack some T shirts, long sleeved shirts and pants to warm coats and rain gear, you just never know this time of year.

Play it Safe!

Other than the Summer months, when traveling to Niagara Falls, like many other northern areas, make sure to pack smart. Bring along a warm sweater and long pants just to be safe for those evenings or even some days when the temperatures are a little bit cooler than your comfortable with.

Niagara Falls is one of the most special gifts that God has given to mankind. It sheer beauty and magnificence leaves all those who view it breathless.

The Niagara Falls is divided into the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls. The Horseshoe Falls drop about 173 feet and are 2600 feet wide. The American Falls drop 70 feet and are 1060 feet wide. The volume of water that approaches the falls during the peak season is 202,000 cubic feet per second.

The viewpoints from the American shore are usually from behind the falls or astride. As the falls face directly at the Canadian shore, the most complete view of the Niagara Falls is available from the Canadian shoreline.

Niagara Falls – Formation

The Niagara Falls was created by the Wisconsin glaciations about 10,000 years ago which was also responsible for the formation of the Niagara River and the North American great lakes. These were dug by the continental ice sheet that moved through the area like a bulldozer deepening the river channels to form lakes.

When all the ice melted, the upper Great Lakes emptied into the Niagara River. Over a period of time, the river cut a gorge through the north facing cliff. The rock structure did not erode in an even manner as it was composed of three varied rock formations. The uppermost rock layer was composed of erosion resistant limestone and dolostone. This layer eroded more slowly than the underlying layers. Immediately below this layer which comprised of two thirds of that cliff, the formation was composed of shale along with some thin limestone layers. Over a period of time the river eroded the softer layers which undercut the hard cap rock leading to a process that eventually carved out the Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls – Preservation

The original Niagara Falls was near the present day Queenston, Ontario and Lewiston, New York but due to erosion of their crest, the falls have retreated several miles towards the south. As the erosion continues over the years the falls will eventually recede far enough to drain most of Lake Erie the bottom of which is higher than the bottom of the falls. Engineers have been working very hard to reduce the rate of erosion to help postpone this eventuality for as long as possible.

Underwater weirs have been used to redirect the most damaging currents. Along with this, the top of the falls have also been strengthened. To provide some examples as to how much work has gone into the entire process, in 1969 the entire Niagara River was diverted from the American Falls for more than a couple of months with the help of a temporary earth rock and a dam. The Horseshoe Falls absorbed all the additional flow and this entire activity gave the American engineers an opportunity to study the riverbed and also mechanically bolt the faults present in the riverbeds which could otherwise hasten the retreat of the Niagara Falls. The temporary wall was destroyed with dynamites in November 1969 and the normal flow of water to the American Falls was restored.

Touring the Niagara Falls

The peak tourism season of the Niagara Falls is during the summertime when the falls are spectacular during the day and evenings. Floodlights illuminate both sides of the falls from the Canadian side for several hours during the evening.

It is expected that about 29 million visitors in the year 2009. The best known tourist attraction at Niagara Falls is the ‘Maid of the Mist’ cruise boat (named after an ancient Ongiara Indian Mythical character) that have been around since 1846 which carries the passengers into the whirlpools below the falls.

Niagara Falls has also been a favorite spot for many Hollywood films like Niagara, Superman II and the very recent ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’. It was also an integral part of the Canadian television series, ‘Wonderfalls’.

Facts On Niagara Falls – What is the Festival of Lights?

Niagara Falls is one of the most visited sites in North America, but once a year, thousands of people flock to Niagara, not to see the thunderous falls, but to see the Winter Festival of Lights, Canada’s foremost illumination festival.

The Winter Festival of Lights includes over 125 animated lighting displays and three million tree and ground lights which can be enjoyed around the Niagara Park Winter Wonderland, including displays such as the world famous Enchantment of Disney, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Fort Erie Racing, a Nativity Scene and the World’s largest illuminated Canadian-American Flag.

The festival first began in 1983 when it managed to attract 250,000 people. Since then the celebrations have steadily grown and the attendance now stands at over 1.3million visitors and 1060 motor coaches each year. Planning for the festival is a year round job, with staff investigating new and creative events and entertainment all the time.

The local economy benefits enormously from the festival, which comes at a time of year that is traditionally quiet on the tourist front, creating significant winter employment for nearby communities. The festival requires hundreds of staff and takes on around 400 volunteers each year.

One of the best things about the Winter Festival of Lights is the price – there is no admission fee to view the illuminations (although donations are gratefully accepted). But there’s more than just the thousands of light displays to see. During the festival, visitors can enjoy 20 nights of spectacular fireworks as they explode high over the mighty falls and there are also a variety of concerts and events during festival; this year, visitors can enjoy Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Niagara Falls Comedy Fest, a variety of singers from the Niagara Gospel concert series, including The Martins and The Beene Family, The Mantini Sisters, Charley Price, The Golden Age Variety Show, The Misty Kids Show and the Nutcracker Ballet.

Niagara falls are a spectacular attraction in their own right, but during the winter festival, there is even more to see and do, so its not surprising that the festival attracts over a million visitors each year, which means hotels in Niagara do tend to get booked up quickly and you’ll need to reserve in advance to be sure of a bed.

With so much to see and do for both young and old, the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights continues to be one of the biggest events in the North American festival calendars; don’t you think it’s time you became enlightened?
